Car Air Freshener MOQ: How Order Minimums Work

MOQ can apply per model, scent, color, printed design and packaging type, and the one that matters depends on your order. Ask how minimums combine, and use shared parts and mixed orders to keep a first order compact.
A minimum order quantity (MOQ) is not one number. For car fragrances, a supplier may have a minimum per model, per scent, per color, per printed design and per packaging type, and the lowest of these is not always the one that matters. Understanding where minimums come from helps you ask the right question and design an order that works.
1. Where minimums come from
Minimums exist because some steps have a fixed set-up effort or a material supplier's own minimum:
| Source | Why there is a minimum |
|---|---|
| Model (construction) | Machine set-up, molding runs, assembly line set-up |
| Scent | Mixing and filling set-up, cleaning between scents, fragrance purchase quantity |
| Color | Plastic or ink color changes, colored glass or materials ordered in batches |
| Printed design | Plates or screens, print set-up, color matching per design |
| Packaging | Printed boxes, cards and blisters are ordered from packaging suppliers with their own minimums |
| Custom parts | Molded parts, custom bottles or caps produced in economical runs |
So "What is your MOQ?" has several answers. Ask instead: "What are the minimums per model, per scent, per color, per design and per packaging type for this item?"
2. How minimums combine
Minimums are usually checked at more than one level at the same time. For example, a supplier could require a minimum per model and a minimum per scent within that model. An order can meet the model minimum in total but still fall below the scent minimum if it is spread over too many scents.
Example (illustrative):
| Order plan | Model total | Per scent | Works? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 model × 2 scents | meets model minimum | each scent meets scent minimum | Yes |
| 1 model × 8 scents, same total | meets model minimum | each scent below scent minimum | No: reduce scents or raise quantity |
| 2 designs on the same model and scent | meets model minimum | – | Depends on design minimum (plates, packaging) |
3. Mixed orders
Mixed orders combine several items, scents or designs in one shipment. They are common for distributors, retailers and new brands. They work best when:
- items share a base model and only scent or a small decoration changes;
- several scents share one packaging design, with the scent shown by a sticker, a printed variant panel or a colored insert;
- you combine stock items (no customization minimums) with a few customized lines;
- you accept a slightly higher unit price on small lines.
Tell the supplier your full mix in one request, so they can find the most efficient combination.
4. Process and packaging minimums
Some minimums are set by the process rather than the supplier:
- Paper cards with custom printing: design and plate set-up; minimums are often per design.
- Custom die-cut shapes: a die can be reused, but each run has set-up.
- Molded parts in a new shape: require a mold; minimums reflect economic molding runs.
- Custom printed boxes and gift boxes: packaging printers' minimums, often the highest single minimum in a private label project.
- Neutral or stock packaging: usually lower or no extra minimum.
Packaging is the most common surprise. Buyers agree a product quantity, then find the custom box minimum is higher. Plan packaging early.
5. Real-world situations
| Situation | What usually works |
|---|---|
| Testing the market with small quantities | Stock products with neutral packaging, or your logo sticker on stock packaging |
| Many scents, small total | Fewer scents first; add more on reorder |
| Promotional run with your logo | Stock shape with custom print; one design |
| Private label launch | One hero model, a few scents, one shared packaging design |
| Retailer range with many SKUs | Shared base models and packaging families, phased launch |
| Custom shape | Plan for tooling and a run size that makes the mold worthwhile |
How to ask about MOQ
Send a breakdown like this:
Item: vent clip, model *ref*
Scents: 4 (A, B, C, D)
Quantity per scent: *x* each
Decoration: logo print, 1 color, 1 design
Packaging: printed blister card, 1 design for all scents + scent sticker
Question: do these quantities meet your minimums per model, scent,
design and packaging? If not, which line is short and what are the options?
This gets a specific answer and options, rather than a generic number.
FAQ
Can I order below the minimum?
Sometimes, at a higher unit price or with stock packaging. Ask which minimum is the limiting one; often only one line needs adjusting.
Are reorder minimums the same?
Usually similar, but costs may fall because tooling and plates exist. Packaging minimums still apply to printed packaging.
Why do minimums differ between suppliers?
Different equipment, material sources and whether they hold stock of bases, components and packaging.
